ABOUT US

Mission

To seek solutions that promote health, prevent disease and protect populations from harm.

OUR STORY

The Collaboration for Evidence, Research and Impact in Public Health (CERIPH) is located in the Curtin School of Population Health, in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia.

CERIPH began as the Western Australian Centre for Health Promotion Research. It was established in 1986 and was the first health promotion research centre in the southern hemisphere. For more than 35 years the centre has sought to undertake applied and real world research and evaluation, and delivered a range of capacity building activities to support health promotion action. We have contributed to the establishment and development of key health promotion and public health programs and policies in Western Australia, nationally and globally.

Recognising the complexity of health and its determinants, our collaboration generates evidence to support action across educational, organisational, socio-economic, environmental and political domains to improve population health in our region.

Our staff are highly skilled researchers, advocates, practitioners, leaders and educators who have built strong partnerships locally and internationally. We are committed to creating meaningful outcomes for individuals, communities and populations. We create synergies by integrating our research, evaluation, consultancy and our capacity building with our well regarded teaching programs.

Objectives

We have a range of day to day objectives which support us to achieve our mission:

  • Conduct high quality research that demonstrates community benefits

  • Build public health capacity of students, staff, sectors and society

  • Build a strong Higher Degree by Research culture and profile

  • Develop and grow existing and new national and international engagement/partnerships with industry, other institutions, consumers and communities

  • Identify and develop emerging strategic and long-term research opportunities and grow existing research

PRINCIPLES & VALUES

EVIDENCE-INFORMED PRACTICE

Population health policies and programs are more likely to be effective when they are informed by high quality evidence.

We are committed to reviewing and synthesising the evidence to develop workable solutions to real-world problems and identify knowledge gaps. Where limited evidence exists, we build the evidence-base using rigorous data collection and analysis methods

COLLABORATION & Co-CREATION

Impactful research requires collaboration across sectors and disciplines and with people who are experts in their own health and social experiences.

We build multidisciplinary teams to understand complex issues, and  to ensure our work has real-world relevance and application. Meaningful involvement by people with lived experience is critical to our work.

INNOVATION & RESPONSIVENESS

Research knowledge should be applied to develop innovative responses to social needs.

Knowledge translation is core to our work, a vehicle to work collaboratively with stakeholders from a range of sectors and academic disciplines to build nuanced understandings of, and responses to, the issues that impact on population health.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Some people start further behind others in relation to their health and may need more attention to address their health needs.

In striving to contribute to the goal of ‘health for all’, we prioritise work with groups who have been under-served on the basis of their gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, age or ability.

FAIRNESS & EQUITY

Effective health policies and programs are not only evidence-informed, but based on the principles of fairness and equity.

Our work highlights inequalities in health access and outcomes, and we work with stakeholders to find ways of achieving the goal of ‘health for all’.
